Nokia leads Android smartphone makers when it comes to software updates: Counterpoint Research

Nokia - HMD Global

More often than not, for most regular users, I end up recommending a Nokia phone in their preferred price segment. One of the primary reasons for the same is that HMD Global, the company that makes Nokia smartphones, promises two years of security updates across its portfolio along with Android version upgrades.

The latest whitepaper by Counterpoint Research – Software and Security Updates: The Missing Link for Smartphones – validates HMD Global’s efforts to keep that promise.

Nearly 96% of Nokia smartphones, sold cumulatively since Q3 2018, is already running on Android Pie or have had an Android Pie update issued to them, making it the fastest brand to reach this level.

The whitepaper notes that except for Nokia and Lenovo, the performance of other device makers has been poor.

In recent times, consumers have started to keep their smartphones for longer. They are also spending a little more when they do replace their devices.

According to Peter Richardson, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, operating system and security updates are an aspect of Android smartphones that get relatively little attention. And perhaps because manufacturers are not talking about it, consumer awareness is also low. It doesn’t appear among the ten features consumers say they care about most, in their research.
